Enhanced Optical Filter Design / Cushing D. - Bellingham : SPIE Press, 2011. - 148 p. : ill. -
Before he passed away in November 2009, David Cushing had written this book to demonstrate how to improve the perfomanse of coatings beyond the techniques described in the standard texts by Macleod and Baumeister. His approach is not mathematical in nature, but intuitive. During his more than 40 years of building coatings and filters, he primarily used an optical monitor as the primary control, as he felt that other available methods of monitoring were unreliable.
With modern energetic sources, the stability of crystal monitoring has vastly improved, allowing nonquarterwave layers to meet reasonable tolerances. Using his approach, David succeeded in making edge filters with 30 layers that followed the theoretical curves within a few nanometers of cutoff tolerance.
This book stands as David's last work and an exellent example of how optical thin can be enhanced standard designs.
