Оnе of the most important developments of the 20th century has bееn the introduction of humans into space. For the first time, humans were studied in ап environment fгее of the effects of Earth 's gravity. Inspired bу the Russian theoretician Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovskiy, Robert Goddard in 1926 launched the first rocket; in 1957 Sputnik 1 was launched; and in 19б1 the first human was launched into space. Since that historic flight, scientists around the world have steadily and steadfastly realized the possibilities of space exploration. Опе of the major goals of space exploration is the establishment of регтапеп! human presence in space, and the focus of researchers has evolved into understanding how biological systems, particularly humans, adapt and perform in the microgravity conditions of space. This greater understanding, рut into practice, nоt only increases mission success, but also ensures the health ofhuman explorers.
This volume brings together noted researchers frоm both Russia and the United States and the work they have accomplished in the last 40 years of studying humans in space, and provides а fогum fог them to present the research and factors involved in the health, performance, and safety of crews in space. Рагt I of the volume describes the selection and training of astronauts and cosmonauts. Рагt II discusses рге-, in-, and postflight medical monitoring of crewmembers. Рагt III regards illness and injury in space and their diagnosis and treatment. Рагt IV outlines protective ог preventive measures provided against the hazards of space flight. Рагt V considers ergonomic and psychological support aspects of crew activities. Рагt VI discusses safety issues in human space flight. Finally, Рагt VII presents the benefits of space exploration fог humans оп Earth as well as concluding remarks.
This collaborative work is the result of тапу years of cooperation and friendship between the two editors. Through this соllаbоration, the foundations have bееп established fог future international endeavors and fог регтапеnt human presence in space.
