This book is dedicated in loving memory of Oleg Georgievich Gazenko (December 12, 1918-November 17,2007), the indefatigable editor-in-chief of the two multivolume publications of joint U.S.-Russian work in space biology and medicine. Dr. Gazenko was а pioneer in both the theory and practice of space biology and medicine; Ье was а dedicated proponent, initiator, and facilitator for the development of intemational cooperation in safe and productive Ьитап space exploration. U.S.-Russian cooperation in space biology and medicine continued largely because of his professional efforts throughout the timе when interstate relations were strained. Не stood out because of his outstanding personal qualities: intelligence, wisdom, diplomacy, patience, and sensitivity. Through his words and deeds, Ье always served as ап example of selflessness and dedication to his work and commitment to universal humаn values. Up until the last days of his life, this fifth volume of the publication U.S. and Russiaп Cooperatioп iп Space Biology aпd Mediciпe remained at the heart ofhis work. It is truly regrettable that he'was unаblе to provide his conclusions for this volume, as had bееn planned. Dr. Gazenko's description of the background and main stages of developing and publishing the two joint fundamental works would have documented the diversity and depth of this cooperation.
Тhе passing of Oleg Georgievich Gazenko was а substantialloss for science, to which Ье devoted the best years of his life, and for а wide circle of his friends and admirers throughout the world. ТЬе editorial staff of the joint U.S.-Russian publication received а huge number of letters from the United States, Russia, and other countries, in which writers expressed their sincerest condolences оп this iпеvеrsiblе loss and remembered the achievements of the deceased in facilitating cooperation, mutual understanding, and close contacts among scientists representing various countries and scientific points of view. Russian readers have the opportunity to enjoy his rich contributions in print in the special edition of the joumal "Aviakosmicheskaya i Ekologicheskaya Meditsina" devoted to the 90th birthday of Gazenko and in the аппех to this joumal. Among the authors of these publications, in addition to Russian scientists, are his U.S. colleagues Amauld Е. Nicogossianl and Stanley R. Mohler, brought together not only bу personal friendship but also bу the overall responsibility for drafting and publishing the multivolume U.S.-Russian publication Space Вiology aпd Mediciпe. U.S. readers should also know that among the authors of the numerous letters received Ьу the editorial staff оп the passing of Oleg Georgievich Gazenko, in addition to those already тепtioned, are mаnу other renowned U.S. scientists who have contributed significantly to the establishment and development of space biology and medicine: Charles Berry, George АЬЬеу, Carolyn Huntoon, John Rummel, Sam Pool, Кеп Sousa, Charles Sawin, Bemie СоЬеп, Thomas Stafford, Victor Schneider, Ron White, and Charles Fuller.
These words convinced the editorial staff that Volume 5 should Ье devoted to the cherished memory of Oleg Georgievich Gazenko as а reflection of the widespread societal recognition of the service of this extraordinary pioneer in space biology and medicine.
