The quality of manufactured goods is vital importance to the economy. The development of new products and production methods requires that high accuracy, certainty, and uniformity of measurement should be provided for and maintained throughout the manufacturing industries.
Product quality, along with the complexity of work and the productivity of labour, reflects the skill of the worker and the quality of his training. And one of the main indicators of his skill is proficiency in measuring and checking the work being done.
This book is based on training programmes in dimensional gauging for metalworkers’ vocational schools.
The first chapter describes the simplest measuring tools introduced at the outset of the training course: steel rules, squares, and so on. The following chapters contain data on measuring tools and instruments that provide higher gauging accuracy; they are arranged according to the purpose, design features, and use in the training process. The more common tools, such as vernier calipers, micrometers, bevel protractors, are described in greater detail regarding their design, setting, and use. The present edition also contains a new chapter dedicated to measuring instruments and gauging devices designed for increased productivity of checking and inspection.
The book can be used for class-room or training-shop work and, with the use of suitable equipment, as a visual aid.
