In today's world, information technology has become indispensable, permeating various facets of life from communication and entertainment to financial transactions and organizational management. However, alongside technological advancements, the threat of cyber attacks has escalated, underscoring the imperative to safeguard Critical Information Infrastructure (CII) from illicit actions. This article delves into the concept and methodology of CII using ontologies. Critical Information Infrastructure (CII) encompasses systems, networks, and entities vital for societal and economic functioning, as well as national security. It includes crucial entities such as energy systems, telecommunication networks, financial institutions, healthcare systems, among others. One approach to protect Critical Information Infrastructure involves employing ontologies. An ontology is a formalized representation of knowledge within a domain, comprising concepts, their relationships, and inference rules. Utilizing ontologies enables structuring information about CII, identifying its constituent elements, their interdependencies, and managing them. Applying the ontology methodology for safeguarding Critical Information Infrastructure enhances the efficacy of security measures, ensuring robust defense against cyber threats. Ontologies facilitate comprehension of intricate system interrelations, provide a unified view of security posture, and aid in making informed cybersecurity decisions.
